Unprotected glass to an East, South or West facing facade will allow solar energy to
directly impact and transmit through the glazing into the building's internal environment where it will become 'trapped' and significantly increase the 'summer-time' cooling load required to produce comfortable working conditions for the occupants. A correctly designed external solar shading structure will prevent the suns direct solar radiation element from reaching the glass windows therefore reduce the solar gain to the building space and significantly reducing the cooling load required to achieve the design comfort conditions for the occupants.

During the winter months solar shading systems allow solar energy to directly impact
the glass windows and so maybe used to contribute to heating the workspace therefore reducing the building heating load and conserving energy.
